Salary Calculator India 2026 – CTC to Take-Home Formula & Example

What is a Salary Calculator and Why You Need One

A salary calculator for India takes your CTC (Cost to Company) and works out the monthly in-hand salary after every deduction — Provident Fund, ESI, professional tax, TDS and any loans or advances. It is the single most important number for both employers and employees in India.

If you run a shop, factory or small office with even 5 staff, you should know how to calculate take-home pay in under 2 minutes. Without it you will keep getting questions like "Sir, annual ₹2.4 lakh bol ke rakha, phir monthly ₹18,000 kyun aaya?" — and those conversations erode trust.

CTC vs Gross vs Net (Take-Home) – Know the Difference

  • CTC (Cost to Company): Total annual cost your employer spends on you — salary + employer's PF contribution + gratuity + insurance.
  • Gross Salary: CTC minus employer-side benefits (employer PF, gratuity, insurance). What actually lands in your salary slip earnings column.
  • Net / Take-Home / In-Hand: Gross minus employee-side deductions (employee PF, ESI, professional tax, TDS). What hits your bank account.

Salary Calculator Formula (India)

Take-Home = Gross Salary − Employee PF − ESI − Professional Tax − TDS − Other Deductions

Typical Indian CTC Breakup (as % of CTC)

Component Typical % Notes
Basic Salary40–50% of CTCPF / gratuity base
HRA40% of Basic (non-metro) / 50% (metro)Partly tax-exempt
Special AllowanceBalancing figureFully taxable
Conveyance / LTA₹1,600–₹2,500 / monthExempt within limits
Employer PF12% of BasicPart of CTC, not gross
Gratuity4.81% of BasicAccrued, not paid monthly

Salary Calculator – Worked Example (CTC ₹6,00,000 / year)

Step 1 – Annual CTC

₹6,00,000 per year = ₹50,000 per month (CTC).

Step 2 – Basic & HRA (Mumbai, metro)

  • Basic = 50% of CTC = ₹25,000/month
  • HRA = 50% of Basic = ₹12,500/month

Step 3 – Other Allowances

  • Conveyance: ₹1,600
  • Medical: ₹1,250
  • Special Allowance (balancing): ₹9,650

Step 4 – Gross Salary (monthly)

25,000 + 12,500 + 1,600 + 1,250 + 9,650 = ₹50,000

Step 5 – Employee Deductions

  • Employee PF = 12% × 25,000 = ₹3,000
  • Professional Tax (Maharashtra) = ₹200
  • TDS (at old regime, after standard deduction) ≈ ₹0 (within basic exemption)

Step 6 – Take-Home Salary

50,000 − 3,000 − 200 − 0 = ₹46,800/month in-hand.

Step 7 – True Cost to Company

CTC actually paid out includes employer PF (another 12% × 25,000 = ₹3,000) and gratuity (~4.81% × 25,000 = ₹1,202), often grouped into the "6,00,000" CTC header on paper.

Salary Calculator – FAQ

Is in-hand salary the same as net salary?

Yes. In-hand, take-home and net salary all mean the same thing: gross earnings minus all employee-side deductions.

What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?

CTC includes employer-side contributions (employer PF, gratuity, insurance) that never hit your bank account. In-hand is what actually gets credited each month.

How is HRA exemption calculated?

HRA exemption is the lowest of: (a) actual HRA received, (b) 50% of basic in metros / 40% in non-metros, (c) actual rent paid minus 10% of basic.

Do small businesses need to deduct PF?

PF is mandatory if you have 20+ employees. Below that, registration is voluntary but allowed. ESI becomes compulsory at 10+ employees.
